a shomagusworkshop:
anonymous asked: Isn’t the term “white people,” when used as a blanket statement, racist? It obscures a lot of historically oppressed peoples such as the Irish in the early 20th century US and the Jews always and everywhere. A fact which seems to run counter to the entire purpose of this project.
Academically, no. Racism, as a social concept, requires two things - the ability to oppress the ‘receiver’ and the social power that comes with being part of the oppressor-group. Or, to put it simply, “Power+Privilege=Racism”.
It is functionally impossible to be racist against white people in the Western cultural milieu. This is due to any racially charged intent on oppression being unenforceable - society at large is not going to permit or allow engagement in wholesale discounting of white people and their contributions because they are the dominant racial class.
Yo, if you still don’t understand why “racism against white people” isn’t a thing, read the above comments. How the dictionary defines racism as a term is much less important than what it means historically and conceptually. The word ya’ll are looking for is “discrimination” and even that needs to be employed with care.

So here’s the real reason that rape jokes are troubled territory -
Because rape victims say so.
They get to say that. They get to feel that way. On this, they get to set the cultural rules.
It’s not about right or wrong, or logic versus emotion, or arguments of over sensitivity or hypocrisy - you have the free speech to make whatever jokes you want or talk about rape in whatever way you feel is illuminating. But they get to be upset about it. And call you on it. And be hurt by it.
But consider this:
You get to not be a rape victim.
They, however, are not afforded that luxury. Ever again.

Rough Draft of the 2013 tour plan. This is a long one.
I bought the Bonnie Raitt album Green Light (1982) from the $3 bin at Landlocked the other day - mostly because it has the song “Me and the Boys” which is just a phenomenal track. But it turns out that this album mostly just ROCKS. Side B is driving me crazy - check out this track, “Baby Come Back”. It’s one of the many great songs on this album. Bonnie was really grooving in 1982!
